Working with rows, columns, and cells

As the name suggests, here in this article we would be discussing one of the Basic Excel Topics that BeXpert Advanced Excel Home Tuition covers. In Excel, every worksheet is organised into a grid of rows, columns and cells. These Individual cells can also be grouped into ranges, which are just a series of cells that are strung together. All these work in coordination with each other, in order to form the basic layout of an Excel document.

Cell Addresses

Below is the diagram that shows rows, columns, cells, and ranges all in one place:
As it is clearly visible, that Excel labels columns letterwise. It is also visible that column labels are highlighted along the top of the screen: A, B, C, etc. Rows are highlighted along the screenside and organised number wise : 1,2,3 etc. At each row and column intersection is a cell, which is just one of the boxes on the grid of a worksheet. Every cell has a unique address that is a result of the column letter and the row number combination of the given cell. Like B4 cell lies at the intersection of column Band row 4. Whenever a cell is selected, you can see its address in the cell address box that is directly above the labels columns A and B.

Cell Ranges

Multiple cells could be grouped into ranges, that are an adjacent series of cells. Below screenshot is an illustration:
In above worksheet, all cells from C3 to C6 are highlighted. This can be done, by the use of colon (:) character between the first and last cells in the range, like so: C3:C6. This notation is called “Range of all cells between C3 and C6”.

Rows and Columns Manipulation

There are a lot of things that can be done for a row or column manipulation, but prior to that you must select it. To do so, click the label of that row or column at the left or the screen top:
For multiple row and column selection, select the label of one row or column and keep the mouse pressed, then drag over to select multiple:
For selection of all rows and columns in the worksheet, select the small box at the row 1 and column A intersection:
Once the rows or column selection has been done, right click their labels to bring up the row or column manipulation menu, that is visible in the below screenshot.
This menu shows a variety of functions, which you can use as you wish. Column and row resizing can be done by taking the mouse over the divider between two rows or two columns, then clicking and dragging so as to expand or contract it.
